Shhhh....

When was the last time that things were silent around you? As I sit here typing I hear my keyboard, the furnace, my space heater (it’s cold in my office!), some people out in the office, and the copier. That’s a lot going on. Each day, I am deliberate about taking some time to be quiet and hang out with God. And let me tell you… it’s hard. But maybe not like you think.

Sure, it can be hard to make time. There is always something “urgent” that “needs” to be done. But, for me, the harder thing is getting quiet. Really quiet. Even when I can turn off or drown out the audible things that are making noise, I find that my thoughts are screaming. Don’t forget to send that email. I wonder if we’ll hear from ASP today. Did I remember to call so-in-so back? It’s like one thing after another jumps into my head as if someone is trying to keep me from quieting my mind and spending even a few minutes with God.

How is it for you? None of us spend as much “Time Alone with God” as we would like. But, when you do spend that time, how is it for you? Do you feel like you don’t know what to do? Are you frustrated that you never seem to hear God talking back to you? Is there something standing as a barrier to you and God really hanging out?

This Sunday at FX Worship in addition to some awesome singing, we’re going to take a look at another Nooma video and talk some about silence and the discipline of quiet time. I hope you will join us!
