This week the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church (that's the hunk we're in) has been meeting for Christian Conferencing (to fellowship, to worship, to pass resolutions, etc.) at Lakeside. Last night was the worship service where retirees were honored and new ministers were commissioned or ordained.
A total of 45 pastors retired. Among them was more than 1000 YEARS of experience. Wow. Assuming 50 sermons a year, that is 50,000 sermons. How many thousand funerals? Baptisms? Weddings? How many million meetings? How much pastoral counseling? How much time in prayer? How much Bible study? A lot.
In the same service 16 persons were ordained. These sixteen people (not all of whom are working in a church) are filling the hole left by that thousand years of experience. Probably not a very good trade.
Have you ever thought about serving the church through full-time ministry? Have you ever felt that God might be calling you to be a pastor? I am confident that God is calling enough people to meet all the needs of the church. But from the looks of things, not everyone God is calling, is answering.
