Do you know a really good listener? You know the type. Someone who will actually stop and take the time to hear what you have to say. They don’t keep interrupting with advice or try to “fix” things. They don’t judge, they don’t look down on you because of how you feel. Growing up, the person in my life who was this kind of listener was my mom. I don’t want to ask her how many nights (it was always at night… after a long day… long after I should have been asleep), we talked all that was going on in my life. Shared my hurts, expressed my fears, told of my frustrations.
God is that kind of listener. The psalmist writes, “I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” (Psalm 116:1-2).
And, God invites us to be that kind of listener for one another. What kind of listener are you? Are you a good listener like my mom or like God? As you go through your day today, I invite you to look for opportunities where God might use you, as a good listener, to give comfort. If you are in need of a good listener, definitely go to God. Also know that any one of the adult leaders in our ministry would love to listen to anything you have going on.
